Rehabilitation

Concussions:

When it comes to rehabilitation for concussions, there are different areas that could need rehabilitation. Getting rest is the first step in recovering from a concussion, this can be done by limiting physical activity, reducing screen time, and getting plenty of sleep. Once symptoms start going away, then light activity is acceptable as long as symptoms do not worsen. When symptoms are mild or nearly gone, return to play is acceptable as long as symptoms do not worsen, if they do then activity should be shut down.

Fractures:

Non-operative methods allow a faster return to sport than surgical methods. According to the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, in 2019, a study reported that non-operational methods have lower complication rates and high satisfaction. Rehabilitation and recovery varies among age groups. Children and adolescents are able to heal faster than adults. The type of fracture can cause a variation in treatment as well. It is recommended to exercise and increase the physical activity level over time until the injury is healed.

Sprains:

Time is of the essence when it comes to rehabilitating a sprained ankle. Generally, within the first 24-48 hours rehabilitation exercises should be utilized. The goal of rehabilitation is to return to full range of motion. This can be achieved by following a routine of stretches and mobility exercises. Such exercises like the Ankle alphabet, which involves writing the capital letter of the alphabet with the big toe as larger as possible, or banded ankle inversion or eversion can help to regain the full range of motion. After working on this for 1-2 weeks, strengthening and stretching exercises can be focused on to help strengthen the ligaments. This can include Standing stretch, Seated Stretch, or even Calf raises.

Tears:

Rehab consists of operative and non operative options depending how severe the tear is. Both options consist of physical therapy because physical therapy can help strengthen and reduce pain. “In highly active patients engaged in jumping, cutting and pivoting sports, early anatomical ACL reconstruction is recommended due to the high risk of secondary meniscus and cartilage injuries with delayed surgery, although a period of progressive rehabilitation to resolve impairments and improve neuromuscular function may be recommended”(Diermeier et. al, 2021). There are also non-operative treatments with structured, progressive rehabilitation option.
